Portal of Spirit: Mapping the Unseen World by Charo Oquet
Portal of Spirit: Mapping the Unseen World
In Portal of Spirit: Mapping the Unseen World, Charo Oquet engages the circle not as motif but as mechanism—a working portal that stages the passage between the visible and the invisible. In dialogue with Hilma af Klint’s conviction that painting can render “the unseen forces of existence” and Wassily Kandinsky’s understanding of the circle as the synthesis of oppositions—precise yet infinite—Oquet mobilizes abstraction to register inner necessity rather than outward likeness. Her paintings oscillate between cosmos and cell, vibration and womb, diagram and ritual. Color operates not descriptively but affectively, sounding across the surface like a struck chord; each composition proposes an encounter in which perception slows and attention widens.
What emerges is a cartography of spirit: paintings that do not illustrate belief so much as instantiate it through measure, rhythm, and recurrence. The circle becomes a site of return—birth, growth, death, renewal—while also asserting a present-tense intensity. Oquet’s canvases model how abstraction can be both intimate and expansive, inviting viewers to stand inside the work’s radius and consider the energies that bind body to world, image to memory, matter to time.
